The Tube with kids or a buggy

Free travel for under-11s, buggies on escalators, and where to find lifts and baby changing.

Who travels free

Children under 11 travel free on buses and trams at any time, and on the Tube, DLR, Overground and Elizabeth line when travelling with an adult. One adult can take up to four children under 11 free. Older children can get discounts with a Zip Oyster photocard. More on fares.

Buggies and pushchairs

  • Use the lift where there is one. TfL's Conditions of Carriage say you can take a buggy on moving escalators, but a double or tandem buggy must be folded first; if it can't be folded, don't use a moving escalator.
  • Keep your child strapped in and the brake on whenever you stop, and never leave a buggy unattended. TfL suggests getting on and off backwards where there's a step.
  • Mind the step and gap. Watch for thin grooves in the door runners on some trains if your pushchair has thin wheels.
  • Space on board. TfL says most Tube trains have multi-purpose areas suitable for buggies, except on the Central, Waterloo & City and Bakerloo lines. Give up wheelchair spaces if a wheelchair user needs them.
  • Staff may help carry a buggy on stairs, but can't always; they'll ask you to carry your child and fold the buggy.

Stations with baby changing

TfL's station data lists baby changing at 53 Tube stations:

Level boarding with a step-free route

At these 34 stations, TfL's station data records a step-free route from the street and level access to the train at every Tube platform, which is the easiest combination with a pushchair:

Lifts can be out of service, so check each station's live page on TfL before you go.
